3DXDolls interviews Roysdolls Part 2

Hey everyone! We're back with the 2nd part of our interview with Roysdolls. Here we're going to get into more technical aspects of doll photo/videography. Lets get started!

How did your GF take you owning a doll? The common misconception is that doll owners are generally lonely men, but in our experience we’ve found doll owners come from all walks of life.

To be honest I was surprised myself too how she reacted when I showed her my first doll ”Emilie” that was standing in the corner of my spare room I had. She said that she won't judge me that I have one because everyone has their own thing. I also told her that I use my doll for my photography which she didn't obviously believe at first. When we moved together we discussed more about the dolls existence in our shared apartment and we both agreed that they should be stored when I'm not planning on shooting photos of them. It's the same with other (her) toys. So far it's been good, you just have to be honest with your partner why you need a doll and what is it for whether it's creativity reasons or just kinks.
There are different doll owners that are not just lonely men. I have spoken with some of my subscribers and found out that there are couples with a doll. There are also women who also owns a doll. I find it sad how doll owners are stereotypically labeled as ”lonely men” because how they are shown on the media. I don't think owning a sexdoll is the reason that makes an individual a loner who can't get sex or find a relationship. It's the mindset of ones own.

Do you have any inspirations in your art?

I got my inspiration from Stacy Leigh's photos of Realdolls and later CubikoMandos  who has shot most of the Wmdolls product photos. But during these past two years  I've been getting inspiration from models on Instagram as well as many 3D artists on  X.

I hope that Redrobot3D is a big inspiration for you! Yes Cubiko is an amazing photographer and we got to know him very well during the opening and setting up process of 3DXDolls.com

I have seen your work and because of you I'm trying to get back into 3D rendering!

What has been your feedback in regards to your work?

It has mostly been positive on all platforms. The feedback I usually get is that my  dolls look hot. It comes through in my photos that I really make a real effort with my  work. It is nice to hear because I really try my best to improve my content in every  way.

Have you ever photographed live models in the past?

Just band promos, weddings and live concerts.

How long does it take you to put together a shoot?

From 4 hours to 16 hours total. Sometimes I have to diversify shoots to different days that's when it might take a total 36 hours if I have to include the video shoots.

For your films you decide to make adult content with your dolls. What was your  thought process in that?

I simply thought that my films needed some movement in addition to staying still  most of the time. And when I did research about adult content of dolls I realized that  there were just too many bad videos out there and some OK videos that could be  filmed and edited better.

Yes I’ve found that too. Not many people really know what to do or how to position their dolls for the shoot. Costumes, hair, and make up go a long way towards making the video look professional.

At least some effort needs to be made if you want to make decent videos for any audience. All the small details matters, you don't see messy hair or low light footage on amateur adult videos either.

Do you have prior editing experience?

I have done some music video editing in the past. I also like to edit B-roll videos of  my travel videos when I have the time.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into video editing and photography with their dolls?

I have nothing fancy tips to give when it comes to editing the doll videos. Just learn the basics of your editing software like cutting footage, adjusting exposure and exporting the video in the correct format.
For photography you can get good result with a second hand camera with 50mm f/1.8 lens for starters or you can use your cellphone but I advise avoiding the wide-angle that most phones provides because it causes barrel distortion and it makes photos look boring or unnatural.
Lightning is the most important factor when it comes to shooting photos or filming. Because good lightning allows to use iso100-400 settings that gives good dynamic range and sharpness whether your are using a dslr or just a phone for shoots. Also learning the basics of lightning how to illuminate face without causing harsh shadows gets you a long way. I think dolls are the best test subjects for lightning experiments than using apples or oranges as subjects (I used to do that) when it comes to portrait photography. Lightning equipments don't have to be expensive, anything that can put on a stand and lit the subject should do the trick in the beginning. Also keep experimenting with the equipments you have and make use the available light around your place like the window lightning. Once you are comfortable with the results you get with your current setup and gear you can start investing in additional lights like hairlight, fill lights and background lights.
Best equipments won't make your photos any better if you don't pay attention to the background or the small details like hair, fingers and eyes. So I advise doing a little clean up before the shoot and remove anything distracting from the scene like family portraits, personal items that don't have anything to do with the portrait. And take care of the small details like hair styling, finger poses and eye directions. If the doll has shrugged shoulders then make sure to use that to your advantage because it allows you to make ”natural poses”. In order to make a doll portrait with a somewhat natural pose I highly recommend to study poses that you can find on internet.

Where do you see Doll tech going in the future? Also which brands would you tell folks to be on the lookout for?

Based on what I've seen on social media dolls are getting more detailed and realistic looking. But I don't see that we are getting dolls with proper robotic functions anytime soon...
I would recommend looking at Wmdolls or Angelkiss dolls because they bring out impressive models, also Zelex Doll's new SLE series has also stunning looking dolls!

Would you ever want to attend a sex doll expo?

It would be interesting for sure to attend one but I don't think I have time for that.

What are you looking towards for the rest of 2024 and beyond?

I'm looking forward to create more content with my dolls and improve my skills to make even better photos and videos. I'm currently looking for a place that I could use as a studio so that I have more space and freedom to shoot content. And maybe get a fourth doll!
